Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Port
The government of Sanya, a popular sightseeing destination in south China's Hainan Province, will build a Chinese brand of luxury passenger liners together with two state-owned enterprises to further boost the city's tourism.
According to a cooperation agreement signed on Friday by the Sanya government with China Communications Construction Group (CCCG) and China National Travel Service (HK) Group Corporation, the three parties will establish a joint venture to build their own brand of cruise passenger liners.
Focused on cruise service, the cooperation extends to hotel operations, duty-free trade, and cultural entertainment, among other businesses.
"With the improvement of our cruise terminals, especially the establishment and growth of domestic cruise liner companies, the number of passengers arriving at and departing from the Sanya port has been increasing rapidly. Cruise service will be an important part of Sanya's tourism industry in the future," said Wu Yanjun, mayor of Sanya.
Figures show that the volume of Chinese passengers on cruise trips has been increasing by an average of 34 percent annually in the last decade.
The number of Chinese cruise passengers is expected to reach 4.5 million by 2020.
Drawn by this trend, the CCCG entered the Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Port in order to build it into one of Asia's largest international cruise ports.
"The cruise service industry has been developing in China, but the industry is dominated by foreign brands, not our Chinese brands. Now what we are going to do is to be the leader and boost the growth of the industry," said Liu Junli, secretary of party working committee of the Hainan headquarters of CCCG.
