Sanya Bay is a popular site for swimming and sunbathing. However, excessive offshore tourism development in recent years has caused environmental problems for the coastal landscape and marine system in the area.
In response to the worsening situation, 5 major measures have been launched to protect the marine ecosystem and improve the beach quality of Sanya Bay.
In 2013, the Sanya government invested 660 million yuan into the reconstruction project of wastewater separation infrastructure at Sanya Bay. The purpose of this project is to reduce the pollution levels at Sanya Bay and the nearby sea area by substantially decreasing the volume of combined sewer overflow into the sea.
In 2014, a preliminary plan for greenbelt renovation in Sanya Bay was approved. The total area of the renovation project is about 350,000 sqm. Its eastern end connects to Haihong Square while its western end connects to Narada Sanya Resort, spanning a length of 7 km.
As popular Sanya Bay has been ravaged due to seasonal typhoons and the influence of human activities, the local government started a sand replenishment project to bring the sand back in June 2014. To improve the beach quality, vegetation restoration efforts were also carried out at the coastal greenbelts and the dunes along the 12.8-km-long Sanya Bay.
In order to make sure that the Sanya Bay area will offer more fun, enjoyment, and entertainment and better services for tourists and local residents, the local government has embarked on a planned project to add 4 public leisure squares as well as the renovation of Haihong Square in Sanya Bay. The four newly added leisure squares are: Dalishen Square, Gangongniao Square, Luyi Square and Haihong South Square.
